Carlene Quinn

Thanks to Carlene Quinn for this write-up of the Natural Horsemanship day held on Sunday 16th August

On Sunday 16th August my horse Camiro  (Cam to his friends) and I headed off to Myreton to take part in our first Natural Horsemanship workshop Beginner’s Workshop.

I went along with an open mind since I was only familiar with Natural Horsemanship through horse magazines and books.

In the morning session there were 7 participants with horses of different breeds and ages. Ruth Vaughan-Henry’s friendly manner and clear explanations were helpful in making us all feel at ease including the horses!

She gave each of us individual attention and groundwork exercises to try out which would help to build confidence, trust & respect.  I found this very helpful because my horse can be a bit of a fidget and in your face at times!

After a lovely lunch, catered for by our chairman, Fiona, we had a loading demo by Ruth. I drove home contented, knowing that I had a few more tools in my toolbox and clearer lines of communication with my horse.

I, for one, am looking forward to the next workshop.

Balmoral Ride - Jenna Robson

Balmoral rideThanks for this report from Jenna Robson

On a rather damp afternoon 7 riding club members headed off to Balmoral for a ride on the Queen's horses and through her estate.  We were all very excited about this hack and just couldn’t wait to get there!  Before we had our ride we just had to get some lunch.  The food was so tasty and the cakes were even better!

We excitedly set off in our waterproofs to be given our ponies for the ride.  The lead rider asked if anybody wanted to have a livelier ride.  Jackie volunteered her and myself to have a more “lively” ride and I’m sure my face was a picture when I was told I would be riding Fling.

Once we were all mounted we headed off to explore the estate on horseback. It took me a while to get used to a different pony as I am so used to riding my Highland. I finally got settled, and then we started going up a very steep hill that wasn’t for the faint hearted!  However the view from the top was amazing, we looked down on Balmoral castle. We continued on our ride through forest tracks and headed for the highland pony stud by the river. I spotted a corgi running about in the long grass and laughed “wouldn’t it be funny if the queen was out walking her corgis” and sure enough there was the queen a few feet ahead of the dogs!

We then went through a river, which was really cool, as I have never done that before.  We then went past the fields full of Highlands. The foals were gorgeous and I could have easily have taken one or two home!  We then had a canter along the riverside, which was fun.   We continued our ride round paths and forestry and up hills and down then it was time for another canter. This time however I wasn’t so controlled and blasted off! It was fantastic!   The sound of the thundering hooves along the path was amazing. As we finally arrived back at the stables I really didn’t want it to end not only because I didn’t think I would actually be able to get off but also because I had such an enjoyable ride with lovely people. I hope we will make this a regular event in the riding club diary!

Thank you for organising such a fab day!
